Top reasons to choose a course-based MPH program in Canada

Application intake for Public Health Graduate programs in Canada usually begins in September each year. To secure admission for the Fall session of next year, start your preparation in May/June of the previous year, as application intake begins in September. Choosing the right graduate program is a crucial decision. In Canada two of the popular public health graduate program options are the Master of Public Health (MPH) course-based program and the Master of Science (MSc.) research-based program. While both have their merits, an MPH program offers unique advantages that make it a compelling choice for prospective students.

As MPH is a course-based program, usually international students need to pay full-tuition, and scholarship opportunities in Canada are competitive for the program. But chances of employment are higher for graduates of the MPH program. And eventually you can gain-back the money you paid for tuition within three to four years of your job. So, this is indeed a good education investment, if you are able to pay for tuitions.

Some of the unique perks of MPH program are as follows:
1. Practicum Placement:

Practicum Placement is one of the features that make MPH program unique. This program lets you have hands-on experience in real-world public health settings such as government agencies, non-profit organizations, healthcare facilities, and international health organizations. This practical component is invaluable for applying theoretical knowledge to real-world problems and enhance skills. This direct application helps to solidify understanding the theoretical knowledge. University of Alberta, for example, offers a six-credit practicum placement, in the final semester of their MPH program.

2. Quicker path to employment:
MPH programs are designed to prepare students for immediate entry into the public health workforce. The curriculum focuses on practical skills and knowledge that are directly applicable to public health jobs. According to the UofA’s website, employment rate of their grads are over 90%. The practicum placement is a big support in this aspect. The placement lets you get Canadian work experience, which adds a lot of value when you seek job. There are many students from UofA who did their practicum in the Government, and were eventually able to land a job, using that experience. The practicum allows you to do networking, which has its own value.

MPH also has a faster completion time. You can complete the program within 4 semesters, which typically takes around 1.5 years to complete.

3. Broad Career opportunities:
An MPH equips you with a broad skill set that is applicable to a wide range of public health careers. You’ll gain expertise in areas such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, environmental health, and health promotion. This versatility allows you to pursue diverse roles in various public health settings. While I did my MPH, I took courses on public health leadership and management. These courses were very helpful in prepping myself as a public health professional. MPH courses prepare you for roles that involve planning, implementing, and evaluating public health programs and policies, as well as managing teams and projects.
